On October 11, 1993, I walked into my local computer
dealer to buy some software to use on my new computer.
As I looked at the large selection on display, I caught
sight of the Expert Software title "Perfect Typing."
Amazed by the low price, I spoke to the clerk about
it. I was told that this program was one of his most
popular titles. So I acted on his advice and bought
it. This typing program has served me well these
past two years. My friend and I are always battling
to see who types the fastest.
Once upon a time in a city far, far away, there
lived a great giant. His name was Eron the Big.
For years he had terrorized the neighboring towns.
One dark June night, a young soldier named Flator
arrived at the hamlet of Nazalblow. On discovering
the predicament of the villagers, Flator set off to
seek Eron's lair. After journeying for many minutes,
he spotted a gigantic footprint and decided that it
was to dangerous.
The revitalization of Falstaff in Shakespeare's
"The Merry Wives of Windsor" lightened the hearts
of many. Only too sadly did we watch that miserable
wretch depart downtrodden and completely disgraced
from the previous play. There are those who cheered
his fall, but they do not understand the faults of
the overly ignorant. We applaud this re-birth and
delight again in his antics. Long may Falstaff chase
plump middle-aged women, and gorge himself on venison
and ale.
Today's state of the art typing tutor pits the
quick brown fox jumping over the dog against your
left pinky which refuses to reach the "Q" key.
Many of us blame short fingers and old injuries
for our lack of dexterity, while others blame
the keyboard. We (the publishers) can only reply
that with repeated practice, the "uuick broon fix"
will soon stop jumping over the "lazy sog." In a
matter of a few days those short fingers will
lengthen into keyboard Fred Astairs and those
words per minute will climb.
As I knocked on the door of #17A Doomcrest Lane, I
felt a chill run down my spine. At the time I
attributed it to the $19.95 overcoat I was wearing
in the unpleasantly damp weather. Upon later
reflection, I realized I should've heeded
my instincts. Instead, when the door creaked
open, I entered. Inside, a dimly lit hallway led
into a sparsely furnished livingroom. Here I
was told to wait by a short humpback man in
a butler uniform. Raising his mournful eyes,
he stared at me and said, "Hey Bud, Where's
the Party?"
For a program to be understandable to the human
reader, its over-all structure must in some
sense reflect the over-all structure of the
problem it solves. Program construction techniques
that aim at achieving such a structure have been
described as "Structured Programming." Structured
programming should also be supplemented by methods
of systematic problem solving. This is to insure
correct and precise programs.
As I lept off my white stallion with an energetic
"Hi-Ho Silver," I suddenly remembered that it
was Tonto's birthday. I glanced quickly up at
the sun only to discover that I had only two
hours before Tonto's return. My mind raced
desperately seeking an idea. "What can I get
that faithful Indian for his birthday?" I thought
out loud. Then the answer hit me like a silver
bullet.  I sped to my local store and purchased
a set of silver arrows. What a pal!
Silently our hero climbed down the rope and into
the darkness of the dragon's den. His sword, held
tightly in his right hand, gave off a faint green
light shining in the mist. Walking stealthily, he
followed the twisty tunnels that descended toward
the nest. Suddenly, with a roar of flame and smoke,
the dragon was upon him. Twisting quickly to his
left, our hero deflected a spear of flame with his
magic shield, and in the same movement, opened up
a footlong gash in the dragon's leg. Bellowing in
pain, the beast lashed out with his tail.
Budo, the master ninja, entered the room. The
students respectfully bowed and took their places
in line. Then, with the gracefulness of a cat and
the power of a lion, the master demonstrated the
techniques required to achieve excellence at this
difficult art. The student gazed in awe. One of
the younger students was heard whispering, "One
day, I will be that good." The master turned,
glanced at the student, and smiled.  He knew that
he had just heard the next generation Master Ninja
